Collage, from the French verb coller, meaning “to glue,” is created when unrelated elements (usually paper) are assembled and glued together to form a new whole. This workshop introduces some of the basic techniques to consider when making a collage, and addresses issues of compositional structure – including color relationships, direction and movement thinking about how various elements work in relation to each other and as a unified piece. A collage may include magazine and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paint, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects – glued to a piece of paper, wood surface, or canvas support. The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years, but the technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th Century with work by artists Braque, Bearden and Picasso, and is currently undergoing a revival in contemporary art. <Register now>

Adult Workshop
4 sessions, Thursdays:
June 4, 11, 18, 25
7:00 – 9:00
Instructor: Cynthia Smith
$200.00

Mosaic is the process of creating images by arranging and assembling small pieces of colored glass or stone, known as tesserae. This technique has existed since early Mesopotamia in the 3rd Century, B.C. This workshop will cover the fundamentals of this ancient craft including the basic techniques, tools and materials involved in creating mosaics, including cutting, adhesives, design/layout and grouting. Participants are introduced to the history of the art form; direct and indirect methods; and a wide variety of materials; and will complete one project of their own design (ie. table top, mirror, window hanging, etc.) during the workshop sessions. Participants are encouraged to experiment with color and texture to discover the artistic possibilities of mosaic, and are ultimately able to transition from making mosaics in a classroom setting to making mosaics at home. <Register now>
